Wix and Squarespace are the two names most small business owners land on when they want a website without hiring a developer. Both are hosted builders: you pay a monthly plan, and the platform handles hosting, security and updates. Both can produce a professional site.
The difference is in how they get you there. Here's an honest comparison, and how to tell when neither is the right fit.

Design: Freedom vs Guardrails
Wix's editor lets you place text, images and buttons almost anywhere on the page. That freedom is great when you have a clear picture of what you want. The catch is the mobile version: a layout that looks perfect on a laptop can need separate fixing on phones, where most of your visitors are.
Squarespace builds pages from pre-designed sections with consistent spacing and type. You get less freedom, but it's harder to make a page look amateur. For a photographer, salon, restaurant or consultant who wants something elegant with little effort, that's often the better trade.
Choose your Wix template carefully
Wix's help center says you can't switch the template on an existing site. To change designs you create a new site from another template and copy your content across, and Wix warns that can affect your SEO. On Squarespace 7.1 you restyle fonts, colors and sections instead of swapping templates.
SEO: A Tie for Most Small Businesses
Both builders cover the basics Google needs:
- Editable page titles, meta descriptions and URL slugs
- Image alt text
- Automatic sitemaps and mobile-friendly layouts
- 301 redirects when you change a URL
- Google Search Console connection
For a local service business or a small shop, the builder won't decide your rankings. Your content will: a page for each service, clear service areas, real photos, reviews and a complete Google Business Profile. Where both builders can feel limiting is on large content sites or stores with thousands of products, where WordPress or Shopify give you more control over structure and speed.
Online Stores and Bookings
Both can sell products, take bookings and run simple memberships. The details live in the plans.
Core and up

If you're selling more than a handful of products, compare the plan you'll actually need, not the cheapest one. On Squarespace, moving up from Basic removes the store transaction fee. On Wix, the entry Light plan doesn't take payments, so a store starts at Core.
For appointment-based businesses, both offer built-in scheduling. Test the booking flow on your phone before you commit: that's how your customers will use it.
Pricing in 2026
Both builders change prices and run promotions often, so treat these as a guide and check the official pricing pages before you buy. In October 2026, Squarespace listed Basic at $19, Core at $29, Plus at $49 and Advanced at $99 per month when paid annually, with higher month-to-month rates. Wix listed Light, Core, Business and Business Elite, with Core as the first plan that accepts payments.
Remember the costs around the plan too: a domain after any free first year, a professional email address, paid apps or extensions, and card processing fees on every sale.

How to Choose
Pick Wix if you...
- Want to place elements exactly where you like
- Expect to add features over time through apps
- Are comfortable checking and fixing the mobile layout yourself
Pick Squarespace if you...
- Want a polished design with as little fiddling as possible
- Run a portfolio, service, hospitality or small product business
- Prefer built-in features over a large app market
Signs You've Outgrown Both
- 1
You need custom features
Integrations, calculators, portals or workflows the builder or its apps can't handle.
- 2
Speed is holding you back
Slow mobile pages are hurting your ad costs or your rankings, and the builder limits what you can fix.
- 3
Your store or blog is growing fast
Thousands of products, complex variants or hundreds of articles need more control over structure and SEO.
- 4
You want to own the code
On a hosted builder, the site stays tied to your account and plan. Some businesses want a site they can move anywhere.
When that happens, the usual next steps are WordPress for content-heavy sites, Shopify for serious ecommerce, or Webflow for design-led marketing sites. A move is a rebuild, so plan redirects from every old URL to protect your search traffic.
The Bottom Line
Wix is the better pick if you want freedom and extra features. Squarespace is the better pick if you want a polished site with little effort. Both can rank and both can sell, so choose on how you like to work and the plan you'll really need.
