Squarespace vs WordPress: Which Should Your Business Use in 2026?

Squarespace vs WordPress compared for small businesses: ownership, SEO, plugins, maintenance, real 2026 Squarespace pricing, and the true cost over three years.

The short answer

Squarespace is a hosted, all-in-one builder: one monthly plan covers hosting, security and updates, and the design stays tidy with little effort. WordPress is free, open-source software you install on your own hosting: you own everything and can build almost anything, but you're responsible for updates, backups and security. Pick Squarespace for a simple, polished site you don't want to manage. Pick WordPress when you need custom features, a large content library, or full control over your site.

  • 1Squarespace bundles hosting, security and updates into one plan. WordPress makes you (or someone you pay) handle them.
  • 2WordPress gives you full ownership and a huge plugin library. Squarespace keeps you inside its platform and feature set.
  • 3Both can rank on Google. Content, speed and settings matter far more than the platform.
  • 4WordPress can look cheaper on day one but often costs more once hosting, premium plugins and maintenance are counted.
  • 5Moving between them later is a rebuild, so choose for where your business will be in three years.

Squarespace and WordPress sit at opposite ends of the website spectrum. Squarespace is a hosted builder: you pay one plan, and the company runs the hosting, security and updates for you. WordPress is open-source software you install on hosting you choose: you get full control, and full responsibility.

Neither is better in general. The right pick depends on how much you want to own, how much you want to manage, and what your site needs to do in a few years. Here's how they compare in practice.

Ownership and Control

This is the biggest real difference. On WordPress, your site is a set of files and a database. You can move them to another host, hire any developer, edit any template and add any feature someone has built or can build. Nobody can change the rules of your site except you.

On Squarespace, your site lives inside your subscription. You can export some content, like pages and blog posts, but the design and many features don't come with you. In exchange, you never think about servers, PHP versions or plugin conflicts.

WordPress.org vs WordPress.com

When people compare Squarespace with WordPress, they usually mean WordPress.org: the free software you install on your own hosting. WordPress.com is a separate hosted service with its own plans, closer to Squarespace in how it works. Make sure you know which one a quote or tutorial is talking about.

Design and Editing

Squarespace builds pages from pre-designed sections with consistent spacing and type. It's hard to make a page look amateur, and the mobile version mostly takes care of itself. The trade-off is less freedom: if a layout isn't something Squarespace offers, you usually can't have it.

WordPress designs come from themes and page builders, and quality varies widely. A well-built theme or a custom design can look exactly like your brand and load fast. A heavy theme stacked with page-builder add-ons can be slow and fiddly to edit. The flexibility is real, but so is the room for mistakes.

SEO: Control vs Convenience

Both platforms can rank well. For a local service business, the platform matters less than having a page for each service, clear service areas, real photos and a complete Google Business Profile.

Where WordPress pulls ahead is control. SEO plugins add fine-grained settings, you can shape URL structures and structured data any way you like, and large content libraries are easier to organize. Squarespace covers the basics well, including titles, descriptions, URL slugs, alt text, redirects and an automatic sitemap, but gives you fewer levers to pull on big or complex sites.

Speed cuts both ways. A lean WordPress site on good hosting can be very fast. A bloated one on cheap shared hosting can be very slow. Squarespace's speed is more consistent, but you can't tune much of it.

What It Really Costs

Squarespace's pricing is simple to read. On its official pricing page in October 2026:

$19/mo

Squarespace Basic plan billed annually ($25 billed monthly)

$29/mo

Squarespace Core plan billed annually ($39 billed monthly)

2%

Squarespace online store transaction fee on Basic (0% on Core and above)

Higher tiers, Plus and Advanced, were listed at $49 and $99 per month billed annually.

WordPress has no single price. Over three years, add up:

  • A domain and hosting, which range from a few dollars a month to much more for managed hosting
  • Any premium theme or plugins, many of which renew yearly
  • Updates, backups and security, either your own time or a maintenance plan
  • Developer time for anything custom

For a simple brochure site, Squarespace often works out cheaper and calmer. For a site that needs custom features or a large content library, WordPress often gives better value because you aren't fighting the platform's limits.

How to Choose

Pick Squarespace if you...

  • Want a polished site without managing hosting or updates
  • Run a service, portfolio, hospitality or small product business
  • Are happy with built-in features and don't need custom integrations

Pick WordPress if you...

  • Want full ownership and the freedom to move hosts or developers
  • Plan to publish a lot of content or need advanced SEO control
  • Need custom features, integrations or a specific design Squarespace can't do
  • Have someone, in-house or a partner, to keep it updated and secure

If You Switch Later

  1. 1

    Inventory every URL

List every page, post and product on the current site, plus which ones get search traffic.

  2. 2

    Rebuild, don't just import

Content can move across, but layouts, forms and store settings usually need rebuilding on the new platform.

  3. 3

    Map redirects

Point each old URL to its new home with a 301 redirect so rankings and links carry over.

  4. 4

    Check after launch

Watch Search Console for errors, test forms and checkout, and fix broken links in the first few weeks.

The Bottom Line

Squarespace is the right call when you want a clean, low-maintenance site and its built-in features cover what you need. WordPress is the right call when you want ownership, room to grow and custom features, and you have a plan for keeping it updated.
